James Jewett making progress in Vallejo

After spending the last month in rehab learning to cope with the serious injuries suffered in an April 6 car crash, 2007 Windsor High School grad James Jewett will be returning home on May 15.

James was paralyzed from the waist down when his car was hit by a San Francisco woman turning into his lane. James’ vehicle flipped and struck a power pole which trapped him inside. Following the crash, doctors said James was paraplegic and a metal rod was fused to his spine that will allow him to sit upright.

Mike Jewett, James’ father, said his son is doing well but still has some pain. James is participating in physical therapy classes six days a week to help develop his sense of balance and improve upper body strength. The therapy will help James develop the skills he will need to adapt to his new life.

“Every day is a struggle,” said Mike. “There is always something new you find out you can’t or can do.”

James is currently staying at the Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center in Vallejo. Mike said his son is receiving a high quality of care at the internationally known facility. “It’s well known,” said Mike. “Therapists come here from all over the world to train.”

Family members are staying with James at the center and are being trained to better help James with his return home in a few weeks. “I’m with him all the time, I sleep next to his bed,” said Mike. “(The family) is doing alright.”

The family will be spending a night at home in Windsor this week as a trial run for their full time return. “We’re coming home Saturday for a one night pass,” said Mike. “We’ll leave in the afternoon come back Sunday, just to go home for one night to see how things go for a trial run. On the 15th we’ll come home. It’s basically a month that we’ve been here.”

James is currently wearing a brace to support his spine while he heals from a surgical procedure that fused a metal rod to his vertebrae. Once he has fully recovered from the surgery, the brace will be removed and James will return to Vallejo for more rehabilitation. “Once (the brace) comes off you have more mobility and there are more techniques,” said Mike.

Mike said the family appreciated the support expressed by the community. “I just want to thank the community. It’s been an outpouring of support, it’s amazing. I’d like to really thank everybody,” he said.

Several fund-raisers are being organized for the Jewett family and more information is available at http://youcandoitjewett.googlepages.com or http://jamesjewettrun.org.

WHS grad paralyzed in crash

CRASH - James Jewett, 19, of Windsor was seriously injured when his car was hit on Old Redwood Highway, just north of Healdsburg Nursery. - Photo by Kerrie Russell

James Jewett, a 2007 graduate of Windsor High School, was seriously injured on April 6, when his car struck a power pole near the intersection of Old Redwood Highway and Los Amigos Road.

Jewett was traveling to Dry Creek Kitchen at Hotel Healdsburg where he works as a bus boy along Old Redwood Highway at approximately noon when his car was hit by a 2005 Audi turning into his lane. Jewett's car flipped and struck a power pole which pinned him inside until firefighters were able to cut him free said CHP Public Affairs Officer Barbara Upham.

The driver of the Audi, San Francisco resident Judith Hayes Patters, 65, was unhurt and unaware of her involvement in the crash until officers contacted her inside a nearby business. Upham said there was no evidence or excessive speed or alcohol at the scene and Patters had initated an unsafe turn.

According to Kimberly Walton, a family friend who has been visiting Jewett in the hospital, the impact shattered his eighth and ninth vertebrae and the bone fragments severed his spinal cord.

Walton said Jewett had lost feeling in his legs and doctors were considering him paraplegic. Jewett underwent several hours of surgery on April 2 to fuse his spine with a metal rod that will allow him to sit upright but he is not expected to walk again.

Jewett was an exceptional athlete at WHS. While he was best known for his accomplishments on the football field, he also competed on the varsity wrestling and baseball teams.

WHS varsity football coach Jason Fayter coached Jewett for three seasons where Jewett was recognized as an all-league linebacker.

“He's a great kid, great to coach, and a helluva football player,” said Fayter. “A good kid like that doesn't deserve something like this to happen to him. It's a real tragedy.”

Walton said the family appreciates the support from friends and relatives. “The family is amazed and proud that their son was loved by the community,” she said.

Jewett attends Santa Rosa Junior College and began the semester with health insurance but lost coverage approximately a week before the accident when he became a part time student.

Walton said Jewett’s family is considering transferring him to a specialized spine care facility to help with his rehabilitation but he will need support from the community.

“He has a huge strong group of friends and family,” she said.

Horrific

The Windsor athletic community is establishing a fundraising plan to help cover the cost of Jewett’s medical expenses, pay for equipment and help with long term costs.
